MOBILITY SCOOTER SAFETY TRAINING DAY
Having done some research, we have decided to hold a Mobility Scooter Safety Training Day.
There are approximately 400,000 mobility scooters used on public roads, footpaths and shopping precincts etc. This number is growing by 10% each year.
Anybody can buy a mobility scooter online, from a mobility retailer or on the second hand market place, such as eBay, Gumtree etc.
According to figures released by the Department of Transport last year there were 260 minor accidents, 61 serious accidents and 14 fatalities involving mobility scooters.
Unlike driving a motor vehicle where it is compulsory to pass a driving test, have an annual MOT and have insurance, there is no legislation in place for mobility scooter users and the risks are similar and even greater in some respects.
There is no requirement for mobility scooter users to have any type of training, insurance or have their scooter serviced regularly.
Mobility scooter users without insurance are open to claims from third parties making them personally liable.
This is why we have decided to hold a Mobility Scooter Safety Training Day. On the day we will have 2 safety assessment tracks set up. A simple track for new users or people who are interested in acquiring a scooter and an advanced track for more experienced users. We will also have an information and advice point where scooter users can discuss or obtain information on anything to do with mobility scooters.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
